WOOHOO!!!!!!

Now this may seem like a fairly small thing, but it's hugely important to me and you'll see why...

Every month I read my favourite magazine in the whole world, Black & White Photography. Not only is it an excellent specialist publication, but one of the finest of any type of photographic magazines. It is always superbly presented and well-written and is great for anyone from beginners to life-long, professional photographers.

Ok, advert over. Why am I so excited? Well, this morning I recieved a pre-released version of this month's magazine - with my 'letter-of-the-month' in it, accompanied by one of my very first still life shots!

I knew it was happening as I'd already been told by GMC Publications' editor, Elizabeth Roberts and I was sent a copy of a lovely book for my troubles! It was still a wonderful surprise in the post, though!

LETTER OF THE MONTH - Creative Shot in the Arm

As a huge fan of monochrome photography I have been an avid reader of your magazine for over two years now and every month I am inspired; howeverMarch's issue was especially welcome!

Due to a recurring long-term mental health problem my creativity hit a dry spell and my inability to get out and about much meant my photography became quite restricted. After reading about Andrew Sanderson's still lifes, however, I was motivated to have a go and have included the two best results. I was very pleased

with them - especially as I planned, shot and post-processed both images in one afternoon! It's a whole new genre for me and one I intend to persue!

Thank you for the monthly creative 'shots in the arm' - I have just bought my copy of May's issue and have already read it cover to cover and am planning my first close-up nature shots (Assignment) and Lee Frost/Sense of Place-inspired coastal scene - we'll see how it goes!

New UK shop!!!

I've just opened a new virtual branch of Emma in Wonderland Photography on Folksy.com

It's like a UK version of Etsy and it means I can sell in pounds rather than dollars and hopefully offer my fellow Brits a better deal on postage, etc! I will also be able to offer bulkier items, such as canvas prints to UK customers which would be difficult and very expensive to ship overseas.

At present the images offered are exactly the same as my Etsy shop, but I should be expanding the range very soon, so watch this space! :-)

Gloss or Matt?

I have a bit of an obsession with matt/matte prints. My subjects, particularly the urban landscapes/portraits and still lifes, look so good on matt that I automatically order them on matte. An advantage of using good matte photo paper is that it reduces reflections, which is why galleries often use satin or matte. Light bouncing off a picture doesn't do much for the image and can be quite annoying for the viewer who has to dodge and weave to get a good look!

BUT!

...saying that, some of the colours I use just look so much better in high gloss - and I mean HIGH gloss! The paper still has the same high quality (I use Fujifilm Crystal archive paper for all my 10x8" and A4 prints) but the colour images are given an extra richness and depth. Beautiful!

So - the ball really is in your court. I often print colour-only and colour versions of my images in both matte and high gloss, so if you don't see the alternative in my Etsy shop, just ask! The price is currently exactly the same for both.

(BTW; I always use a well-established and trusted professional lab for all my printing. Rest assured!)

Etsy Showcases

I sometimes take part in the Etsy showcases, usually the main, art or Storque (blog) categories.

The showcases and blog are a great Etsy community-building exercise and potential customers can find fabulous products and great sellers they otherwise might never come across by browsing alone.

Easter Assignment

In case you were wondering whether I do any other types of work aside from the character portraiture and fine art stuff, the answer is yes! Occasionally I undertake voluntary assignments for my church such as event photography and the like.

One very fun shoot was with a friend's son, Benjamin. I was asked to set up a portrait shoot to exact specifications, that being a young boy in front of a white background eating a lot of chocolate and obviously loving it!

The shoot was great fun. Ben's daddy brought him over to my house and we sat him on the floor (on a sheet...I'm no fool) while the chocolate fun began! William, my own son, played with Ben's dad behind me so in the photo what you can actually see is Benjamin in fact laughing at them! A great team effort! We also had quite a bit of Easter egg left over... ;-)

Buttercups!

Yesterday afternoon (after an anti-anxiety medication-induced nap!) I went across the road into the woods to take some photographs. The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day. I then went onto the field over the brook and it was full of buttercups - such a wonderful sight!


I got a couple of good shots and there's one in particular that I'm very pleased with. I've added a little bit of texture in post-processing to soften the image and slightly mute the pretty yellows and greens. I can't wait to print an 8x10" version to see how it comes out!


As I walked back from the field I had to congratulate God for such a lovely day and such beautiful buttercups. I also thanked him for sharing it with us. Awesome to think He created each and every petal!
